For cash-strapped families, the idea of a smaller three-row SUV can be intriguing. Smaller vehicles cost less up front, are a friendlier size for urban living, and are more fuel-efficient than their larger counterparts. Plus, as the cost of new vehicles continues to climb, every bit of saving helps. But exactly how much are you trading in by choosing a smaller vehicle? We decided to find out by comparing two of the smallest and most fuel-efficient SUVs you can currently buy with three rows.
The 2024 Volkswagen Tiguan and 2024 Mitsubishi Outlander are the two smallest crossovers to offer a third row, and at the time of our request, only the Outlander PHEV was available, and we love the concept of plug-in hybrids so we ran with it. The 2024 Mitsubishi Outlander PHEV GT-Premium we tested rings up at $61,048, but every Canadian across the country can knock $5,000 off that price thanks to the federal government incentives. The Volkswagen Tiguan arrive in top Highline trim at $49,323 as tested. That’s lower than where most three-row SUVs start.
While we’re scrutinizing third-row space most closely here, we will also look at the bigger picture in these vehicles to fully understand what each can offer.

A review that I wasn't expecting, LOL. I had the exact Tiguan Highline R-Line 2023 version and then traded it for the new Outlander PHEV 2023. I think it was the best choice I made. The primary reason I chose the Outlander was the reliability issues I had with the VW, starting with the haptic sensor buttons. I ended up replacing the steering wheel twice, which is ridiculous. I would have kept the Tiguan if it weren't for those over-engineered haptic buttons on the steering wheel that don't work half the time and send radar errors while driving.

I really like Mitsubishi but just wish the design was a little more attrictive especially the front.

No CVT in the PHEV. The petrol engine is mostly not connected to the wheels and the electric motors propel the car alone like a Tesla. Above 70kph and under the right conditions the engine can engage 1:1 with the front wheels for increased efficiency at highway speed.

Probably the absolute worst options you can buy in this segment. 💩
